ECOCR-A (CO6) cobalt welding electrodes are a type of hardfacing electrode, designated by the American Welding Society (AWS) standard A5.13 ECoCr-A. These electrodes are the industry standard for general-purpose wear resistance in high-temperature environments. Key characteristicsComposition: ECoCr-A electrodes deposit a medium-hardness cobalt-chromium-tungsten alloy, with the primary elements being cobalt (balance), chromium, and tungsten. Chromium carbides in the deposit provide the excellent wear resistance.Performance: The deposited weld metal offers a good balance of impact resistance and moderate abrasion resistance. Its properties remain stable over a wide temperature range, and it retains a good level of hardness up to 500°C (930°F).Other resistance properties: The alloy has excellent resistance to mechanical and chemical degradation, including galling, metal-to-metal wear, cavitation erosion, and oxidation.Weldability: The electrodes can be used with both AC and DC welding current and create a stable, soft arc with easy slag removal. It is compatible with all weldable steels, including stainless steel.Machinability: The deposited alloy can be turned with carbide tooling.

ECOCR-C (Co1) is a cobalt-based welding electrode used for hardfacing applications that require high resistance to abrasion, corrosion, and high temperatures. It is also known by the trade name Stellite® 1. The electrode creates a weld deposit with a very high volume of hard, wear-resistant chromium carbides.

  • Composition: The weld deposit consists primarily of a cobalt base with significant additions of chromium, tungsten, and carbon. The chromium provides corrosion resistance, while the tungsten and high carbon content contribute to the deposit's exceptional hardness and wear resistance.
  • Hardness: This is the hardest of the standard cobalt-based hardfacing alloys, offering excellent edge retention.
  • Abrasion resistance: It is well-suited for applications involving severe abrasion and low-angle erosion.
  • Corrosion and heat resistance: The electrode provides excellent resistance to corrosion, oxidation, and retains its hardness at temperatures up to 900°C (1652°F).
  • Crack sensitivity: Due to its high hardness and carbide content, ECoCr-C is more crack-sensitive than other cobalt alloys and has unsatisfactory impact resistance. Care must be taken during welding to minimize cooling stresses.
  • Finishing: The high hardness of the deposit means it should only be finished by grinding.

ECOCR-B (Co12) welding electrodes are cobalt-based hardfacing consumables used for surfacing applications requiring exceptional resistance to high temperatures, abrasion, and corrosion. The American Welding Society (AWS) classification for this electrode is ECoCr-B. Key propertiesHigh hardness: ECoCr-B produces a weld deposit with a higher fraction of hard, brittle carbides compared to the more common ECoCr-A (Cobalt 6) electrode. This results in superior abrasion resistance. Hardness ranges from 42 to 48 HRC (Rockwell C).High-temperature resistance: The higher tungsten content in Co12 provides better high-temperature properties than Co6, with effective resistance to oxidation and wear up to 700°C (1,292°F) or even higher.Wear and corrosion resistance: The weld deposit has excellent resistance to low-angle erosion, sliding wear, galling, and a wide range of corrosive media.Good impact and cavitation resistance: While slightly lower than the ECoCr-A (Co6) alloy, Co12 still maintains reasonable resistance to impact and cavitation.Non-magnetic: The cobalt-based deposit is non-magnetic.Machinability: The deposited weld can be machined using carbide tools.

SS 308L welding electrode is a stainless steel consumable used for welding austenitic stainless steels, particularly 304L, 321, and 347 grades. The "L" in 308L signifies a low carbon content (0.03% max), which minimizes the risk of intergranular corrosion caused by carbide precipitation. This makes it an ideal choice for applications in corrosive environments. Key characteristics
  • Low carbon content: Less than 0.03% carbon reduces carbide precipitation, which helps prevent intergranular corrosion. This is especially important for parts that will operate in corrosive environments.
  • Corrosion resistance: Provides excellent resistance to general corrosion from mildly acidic solutions and exposure to moisture and salt spray.
  • Controlled ferrite: The electrode's composition includes a controlled amount of ferrite, which improves resistance to cracking during welding.
  • Operating current: Typically compatible with direct current electrode positive (DCEP) and alternating current (AC).
  • Welding performance: Produces a stable arc, smooth weld bead appearance, and minimal spatter for an easier cleanup.
