Two percent thoriated tungsten electrodes (color-coded red) are commonly used for DC TIG welding of various materials, including carbon steel, stainless steel, nickel alloys, and titanium alloys. The addition of thorium oxide enhances the electrode's performance, providing a stable arc and increasing its current-carrying capacity. However, due to concerns over the mild radioactivity of thorium oxide dust created during grinding, safer, non-radioactive alternatives like lanthanated or ceriated electrodes are now widely recommended and used for many applications. Health and safety precautionsThe primary hazard of 2% thoriated tungsten electrodes comes from the inhalation or ingestion of radioactive thorium oxide dust created when grinding the electrode tip. To mitigate this risk, it is crucial to follow proper safety procedures: 

• Grinding: Always use a dedicated grinder with adequate local exhaust ventilation to capture the dust. Avoid contaminating general workspaces.
• Personal protective equipment: Wear appropriate respiratory protection, such as a respirator, when grinding thoriated tungsten.
