Cobalt alloy welding wires, commonly referred to by the brand name Stellite, are known for their exceptional wear resistance, heat resistance, and corrosion resistance. These wires are used for hardfacing and cladding applications in industries where components are exposed to severe mechanical and chemical degradation. The core composition is a cobalt-chromium matrix with additions of tungsten or molybdenum.

Grade AWS ClassificationKey CharacteristicsTypical Applications
Stellite 1 ERCoCr-C Highest hardness and exceptional resistance to severe abrasion and erosion due to high carbon and tungsten content. However, it is also the most prone to cracking. Hardfacing valve seats, forging dies, and hot shear blades.
Stellite 6 ERCoCr-A The most versatile and widely used cobalt alloy, offering a balance of abrasion, corrosion, and impact resistance. It also maintains its hardness well at high temperatures. Valve seats and gates, pump shafts, bearings, and erosion shields.
Stellite 12 ERCoCr-B A medium-hard alloy with properties between Stellite 1 and Stellite 6. It has higher hardness and better abrasion resistance than Stellite 6, with improved resistance to galling. Knife edges for timber, plastic, and paper industries, and other cutting applications.
Stellite 21 ERCoCr-E A low-carbon alloy with molybdenum, providing excellent resistance to corrosion, cavitation, and metal-to-metal wear. It also has a lower tendency to crack. High-temperature aerospace and petrochemical applications, such as turbine engine components and valve seats.
